Programme 1: Beylik Hills [6 hours; moderate/challenging pace; 8AM start]

We gather at 8:00 in the courtyard of Kirkinca Pansion to meet each other and check our trekking gear. As with all our treks, good footwear, sunblock and a hat are necessary; and it would be a shame to run out of film! Our guide will introduce the route and answer any questions you have at the outset.

We set out along the Sinice-Camlik road to the west of the village, flanked by the vineyards of distinctive Osmanca grapes and orchards of Sinince Seftali, arguably the very best peaches in the world. The stunning views to the right overlook valleys of olive groves, capped by forested mountaintops.

After about 30 minutes of uphill walking (to an altitude of 600 metres) we arrive at the ancient ruins of one of many small monasteries in Karaotluk [“Black Herb”] Valley and take a 20 minute break to admire this most beautiful valley surrounded by mixed fruit orchards and pine forest.

Kartalkaya [“Eagle’s Rock”] is our next destination, an easy half an hour through rough land rich in mountain thyme, wild oregano, sage, and some of the rare medicinal plants dried and sold in the lanes of Sinince. Before hiking for another hour we will take a break to enjoy the sights and smells of this overlook. Kireccili Village was abandoned about 100 years ago and you can speculate amongst the picturesque ruins about the lives of the 19th century inhabitants.

Yastarla heights is our next destination, set amidst lush forest plants with eastward views towards the Aydin Mountains. We move on to Beylik [“Knight’s”] Hill, the highest peak in the region at about 1000 metres and has the best views westward. Overlooking the fertile coastal plain, we will point out the town of Selcuk and the villages of Ortaklar, Camlikoyu, Havucculu, and Acarlar, some of which have roots in Classical Hellenic and pre-Hellenic times.

It takes a leisurely 90 minutes to walk back to Sirince, including a 20 minute break at the small settlement of Persem. We will be back in good time for a relaxing shower and rest before dinner.
